SLACk stands for Sequoyah Living and Activity Community, Knoxville. It's nickname is utilized for marketing materials, but it is truly defined by its title "The Nexus," which describes its capability to be a link between the any programmatic, green, and walkable nodes of the neighborhood it lies within. The Nexus embodies ideals of a holistic living environment and community center that conglomerates connectivity, wellness, and environmental stewardship. It is a dynamic hub with programmatic enhancements to the neighborhood that allow it to be the last puzzle piece towards pedestrian-friendly community design. Situated in the heart of the Sequoyah Hills Neighborhood in Knoxville, TN, SLACk’s access to the Tennessee River, the Dogwood Trail, and other important programs of the neighborhood encourages residents and community members alike to embrace a lifestyle of wellness and connection. The building lies at the intersection of convenience, accessibility, and comfort.
This semester of architecture, labeled "Integrations Studio" is an immersive studio focused on building a project from the ground up. My group, consisting of myself, Myles Blake, and Dexter Gladney, focused on both technical and very design-based strategies to achieve this building. It is a net-zero energy building that works to create a community space and a new area of missing middle housing in this area. More information is on the full ACSA submission boards below.
